Prague to Karlstejn Castle - Private Day Trips from Prague
Private trips from Prague to Karlstejn Castle
The most important medieval castle in Bohemia occupies a wholly exceptional position among the many Czech castles. The impressive chateau was founded originally as a treasury and safe-keeping place for the Czech crown jewels and holy relics rather than royal seat.
A short distance from Prague, the castle setting in romantic woodlands acquaints visitors with the natural beauty of Czech countryside and a glimpse of some typical local villages.
Its fortification wall galleries afford a beautiful view of the entire castle precinct and the valley below the spreading village.
Named after its founder Charles IV, Czech and German king and Roman emperor, the castle dates to 10 June, 1348 when foundation stone was laid by Charles IV’s close friend and adviser, Prague´s archbishop, Arnost of Pardubice. No other castle in Bohemia or Europe was erected with such solemn circumstance.
Charles was reared with profound respect and reverence for all things holy. As common among rulers and popes of the time, he was also a collector of holy relics and decided to keep his most valuable relics at Karlstejn, including the imperial coronation treasure, which was considered holy at the time.
The castle was never conqured, enduring a prolonged siege by Hussites in the 15th century.
After the reign of Charles, by the 18th century the castle had slowly lost its revered position among Czech castles prior to renewal of interest in this important and historic monument.

Prague to Karlstejn Testimonials
“ Awesome personalized tour of Czech countryside”
We had a full day hiking tour with Kamil through the rock towns of Cesky Raj plus two stunning castle ruins. It was hands down the best day of our two week vacation in Europe! Kamil tailored the tour just for us. He was a knowledgeable, entertaining guide and gave us some great insights into Czech history, culture, and politics. He even found us a gluten-free meal in a traditional small-town restaurant! I would HIGHLY recommend booking a tour with Kamil – if we are ever again in Prague we will definitely contact him.
