The suburb of a former Polish town Oswiecim was chosen for establishing the Concentration Camp Auschwitz in 1940.
Until 1942 the majority of prisoners were the Poles and Soviet POWs.
From early 1942 to October 1944 the camp was functioning as the largest center for the immediate, mass killing of Jews deported here in order to fulfill the plan of wiping out all European Jews.
Many well known people like Viktor Frankl or Elie Wiesel wrote about their experiences in Auschwitz and it soon became a dominant symbol of the Holocaust.
Not long after the war it was turned into the Auschwitz State Museum and it serves as a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and Nazism and as a harsh reminder of modern European history.
Auschwitz is made of two parts. Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau which served as the major place of the Nazi´s Final Solution to the Jewish Question.
From 1942 to 1944 almost 1,3 million people were sent to the camp and 1,1 million were killed in gas chambers with the pesticide Zyclon B. Most of them were Jews but not only. The others were Poles, Russians, Gypsies and prisoners from all over Europe.
Day Trip Prague to Auschwitz: Attractions
During the tour you will be able to first visit the grounds of the Main Camp – Auschwitz I. with the permanent exhibition and in the second part of the tour you will be taken to Auschwitz II. – Birkenau. Photos are allowed.
Auschwitz I.:
Auschwitz I. The main camp in Oswietim. It worked as a camp for about 16 thousand people. It served as a seat of SS garrison administration, the main offices, economic units, supply stores, SS companies.
Now it is a seat of a local State Museum with the permanent exhibition.
Auschwitz II. – Birkenau:
Birkenau was the largest of all camps making up the Auschwitz complex and its primary function was to be the center for the extermination of Jews. About 90% of the victims of Auschwitz Concentration Camp died in Birkenau. A huge number – approximately a million people. We must not forget about 70 thousand Poles and 20 thousand Gypsies, Soviet POWs and prisoners of other nationalities
Auschwitz Concentration Camp – Tour
You will be picked up at your hotel early in the morning to be in time for one of the group tours provided by Auschwitz Memorial starting daily at at 10.30 a.m., 11.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 1.20 p.m. The tours are conducted in English.
The tour takes approximately three hours. Two hours in Auschwitz I. and one hour in Auschwitz II. – Birkenau where the gas chambers were located.
The camp can be visited only on a guided and group basis with a local tour guide. It includes the transportation from Auschwitz I. to Auschwitz II. – Birkenau. Headphone rental is also available.
You can stop to eat and drink in one of the many places along the way.
You will leave Auschwitz directly for Prague in the afternoon. You will arrive approximately at about 8pm – 9pm to your hotel.
